FLUORIDE

Fluoride is provided for use in many different ways to help and prevent tooth decay. It is added to drinking water in many areas of the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, they consider this act one of the ten greatest health achievements in public health in the 20th century. This compound is also added to toothpaste and other oral hygiene products to help prevent tooth decay or cavities in both children and adults.

However in the recent past, many arguments have come up and stated that fluoride may actually do more damage than it is worth. There have been many cases of hyper fluoridation in the water in cities which have caused brown mottled spots on more than a few of the citizen’s teeth. There has also been increased incidence of tooth decay in these towns.

The FDA now has made the makers of toothpaste put warnings on this product to keep it out of the hands of children under the age of six. They say that this product could be toxic to children under that age if the product is swallowed. This can be scary to many people who are concerned about all the chemicals that go into their body now.

There is a trend now of people who are actually using filters to remove the fluoride from their drinking water and purposely not using fluoride toothpaste. The researchers have not done any clinical studies to see if there are actually benefits of doing this, however proponents of this feel that they are much better off not using fluoride than they would be with it.

Since this is a controversial subject, consumers should educate themselves about this product and then make an informed decision as to whether they feel using fluoride is the best thing for themselves and their family.
