SLEEP APNEA DIAGNOSIS

How Is Sleep Apnea Diagnosed?

Sleep apnea is one of the conditions that can be classified under a list for condition that are impossible to diagnose. The main difficulty in finding out whether or not one has sleep apnea is that the condition manifests itself only when the person is sleeping. In order to understand why the diagnosis of sleep apnea is virtually impossible, we need to know what it is in a better way.

This is a condition in which the person loses breathing control while sleeping. This can happen as many as thirty times in an hour when the person is sleeping. When the respiratory control is snapped, the person's breathing will slow down and stop completely, which is when the person will immediately wake up with a snort or a jerk. At this juncture, the person will not even realize what caused him or her to get up from the sleep. They will go back to sleep as though nothing happened, till another lapse in their breathing will jolt them awake again.

Now, it can be seen why the diagnosis is so difficult. When the person gets up, there is usually no recollection at all as to what caused them to get up. There are people who spend a lifetime having sleep apnea and do not realize that it exists. Since there are no perceivable symptoms, no one will speak about it with the doctor also.

There are some identifying factors though…
1.If you feel extremely drowsy in the daytime, sometimes even nodding off to sleep in the midst of doing something, sleep apnea might be the cause. Disrupted sleep in the nighttime can cause extreme sleepiness in the daytime.
2.Does your partner complain about your excessive snoring? Snoring is a highly prevalent condition in sleep apnea.
3.Ask someone to observe you when sleeping. If your breathing stops and you wake up, they will be able to identify the problem.
