TOOTH BRUSHING
The first step in maintaining good oral hygiene is to brush your teeth regularly. The American Dental Association recommends that people brush their teeth at least twice daily with a Fluoride toothpaste. They also recommend that people use dental floss at least once daily. Most dentists however recommend that their patients floss twice daily when they brush their teeth. They also recommend that a person replace their toothbrush every two to three months as they can have bacteria build up on them.
If dental floss cannot be used there are some interdental cleaners that can be used. They are liquid like mouthwash and can be swished around the mouth to rid the mouth of any bacteria that has not be removed by a toothbrush alone.
Dentists recommend that the surface of each tooth be brushed the equivalent of ten times with an up and down motion. The toothbrush should be held against the teeth at about a 45 degree angle. This is so the bristles can get into the edge of the gum line as well as the surface of the tooth at the same time. Gently brush in an up and down motion over two to three teeth at a time. Then move on to the next two to three teeth. Try to cover top then bottom teeth. Then move to the next set of teeth to the left or right and so forth until you have covered all of the teeth in your mouth.
When you have finished the outer surfaces and it is time to brush the biting surface of the teeth. Holding the bristles in a downward motion, brush back and forwards brushing eight to ten times each over three to four teeth at a time. Go over the surface of all teeth on the bottom then switch with the bristles facing up and to the biting surfaces on the top teeth and do the same for them. Brush the tongue after all the teeth are finished. Rinse the mouth with water. Once finished it is time to floss to remove any remaining food particles that could not be removed with brushing. Hold the floss between two fingers and using an up and down motion go between each tooth scraping down the tooth and go up under the gum line. Repeat for each tooth. It is time to gargle with mouthwash if desired. This will help to remove any remaining bacteria in the mouth or tongue..
