TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR SLEEP APNEA
Normally, there is no direct treatment method for sleep apnea. Many people live and die with this condition without even realizing they have it. However, if you feel extremely drowsy in the daytime, sometimes even precariously falling off to sleep when you should be fully awake, or if your bed partner is extremely disturbed by your snoring habit (snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea), you need to see what you can do.
Your doctor may not help you much in this case. By bringing about some lifestyle changes, you can improve your sleep apnea condition yourself. Check these points first…
1.Probably your sleep posture is not good. If you sleep on your back, try sleeping on your side. It might mitigate the condition.
2.Obesity is a very significant cause of sleep apnea. Try reducing your weight.
3.In some people, the muscles that govern respiration are not strong enough. Try doing some chest exercises that can improve the tone of this muscle.
4.Do not overtire yourself when working.
5.Do not consume any sleeping pills or sleep inducing foods before going to bed.
6.Refrain from smoking; it is an important causative factor for sleep apnea.
These are some methods that you must try yourself. However, if improving them does not help your condition, then you need to visit a doctor.
In some cases, sleep apnea is caused due to an obstruction in the respiratory tract. This kind of apnea is known as obstructive sleep apnea. If this is the condition, it can be medically treated by performing surgery to improve the situation. However, this is only a rare circumstance and does not occur in the majority of people that are suffering from sleep apnea.
Most importantly, sleep apnea is a condition that is more grueling on the bed partners than on the patient him- or herself. The patient must understand this and must cooperate with the treatment. There is no point being obstinate and denying the condition if the bed partner insists that it is present.
